Dance With Abandon
There aren't enough opportunities to dance your truest expression on the dance floor. We wait for a wedding, a night out, or some odd occasion where we can finally move our bodies to profound rhythms and tones, but do we take full advantage of the moment? Do we leave it all out on the floor? I dare say not. Here is why and how:
Why should one not withhold their boldest, most authentic moves from friends and strangers?
- Respect. Individuals who dance freely display a level of self-confidence and self-assurance that is both inspiring and contagious. People respect those who are comfortable in their own skin and are unafraid to express themselves openly.
- Breaking norms. Dancing without restraint challenges conventional social norms and expectations, demonstrating a willingness to break free from societal constraints. This is a bold and empowering act that garners respect.
- Physical & emotional health. Uninhibited dancing encourages full-body movement, which can improve muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and cardiovascular health. Dancing is a powerful mood booster, stress reliever and enhances social connections.
- Body awareness & creativity. Discover the wonderland that is your body as you become more aware of it and its capabilities, which can lead to improved body image and self-acceptance. You can explore new movement patterns and styles, stimulating your creativity and personal growth.
- Actually fun. Freedom is fun.
So how does one achieve this type of abandon during le dance?
- Let go & let dance. Focus on the music and your body's response to it rather than worrying about how you look or what others might think. Easier said than done but remember that people are truly only thinking of themselves, so don't waste another minute caring about what they think.
- Set yourself up for success. Wear clothes and shoes that allow you to move. You'd be surprised how hot you can look and also be comfortable. When you feel great, you are unstoppable on the dance floor.
-
Start with small movements. If you're feeling shy or unsure, begin with subtle movements like swaying, stepping, or nodding your head. As you become more comfortable, gradually incorporate larger movements.
-
Experiment. Don't be afraid to try new moves or explore different dance styles. This will help you find your own unique way of expressing yourself through dance.
- Add facial expressions. Or don't. A smile or a straight face can have an incredible impact on the dance floor. A smile shows you're having fun. An intense stare tells the room you're not messing around despite your moves being unique and unconstrained
We hope this important conversation around dance freedom inspires you to talk to your friends about how you can be a braver, better dance buddy and ask forgiveness for the times you held back and cared what other people thought of you and therefore looked like a loser.
